Making Hearts from a Sleeve...

I love creating from leftovers.  Then sometimes I get to use the leftovers of the leftovers!

The jersey hearts come from the same jerseys the Jersey Birds came from!
They look lovely stacked in a bowl, or hung from door handle.

I am going to be wearing my heart on my handbag!...Or maybe I'll be wearing my heart on my sleeve!

World Cup Soccer

On Friday I experienced my first ever World Cup Soccer Match.

 I am so glad that my husband disregarded my wishes all those months ago when he put in a bid for some tickets.  He asked me if I would like to go to a match and told him I would rather have the money.  Fortunately he booked for me anyhow, and I am so glad he did.

It was an incredible experience! The game wasn't all that exciting, but being a part of the festive crowds in the beautiful Moses Mabhida Stadium was a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Even getting there was fun.  We parked at the Pavilion Shopping Centre and then caught a taxi into central Durban, where we were loaded on to a bus which took us to the stadium.

The organisation was excellent and the staff super friendly and efficient! Such a fun day!

Mix-it!

This is a range of Freshly Found Vintage Pyrex Bowls, covered in crocheted string!

They are lots of fun to make and they look good too. I have enjoyed one on my coffee table for a the past few months.

We are going to watch the Brazil - Portugal soccer match in Durban today. I am so looking forward to the experience!

Crochet Opportunity!

My daughter and I put together a Craft Box for a friend. We looked for a vintage jewelery/sewing box, but could not find one, so landed up buying a new jewelery case.

 I got to do the fun bit - crocheting the multi coloured cotton flowers and matching brooch!

Markets of Warwick

Last week we went on a tour of the Markets of Warwick.
It was an incredible experience.  It opened up an area of inner city Durban to me.

 

Before it was no-go zone for me, but the tour has completely changed my perspective and taught me so much about the community who make up these 9 markets.
On Friday, the bead market is open too, and we were given 15 delightful but short minutes to explore:

Indie Flags

In a country that's had it's ups and downs, we are experiencing a time of incredible national pride here in South Africa.  Hosting the Soccer World Cup has been an exciting and unifying experience.

There are lots of South African flags to buy out there, but my daughter Christy and I decided to make an Indie Flag Garland to mark the occasion.
 She insisted that I draw the original pictures - and I can't draw.  She then worked her magic with my line drawings of a leaf, mealie[maize], heart, hadeda and agapanthus flower and made them into a pattern, which she printed on recycled paper to become a patterned South African Flag!

These were a sell out at the I♥market, and I am hoping the beginning of many exciting collaborative projects between us!

Jersey Birds

The I♥ Market on Saturday went so well -  and so did all the Jersey Birds!

Remember, I told you here that I would be making more!
These birds all have a story.
The red one was a thrifted sleeveless knitted top in it's former life.
The soft fluffy cream  one was a woolen jersey that had shrunk in the wash and was given to me by a friend. Thanks D!
And the beautiful blue patterned one came from a friend too.  This one belonged to someone very special in her life and she decided to allow me to be creative with this lovely piece of handiwork. Thanks E! I hope you approve.

Music in the Hills

Just have a look at what conductor Richard Cock wore to the Music in the Hills Concert yesterday! A South African Flag Shirt and a Makaraba

 

I love the way that Soccer World Cup Fever has permeated even as far as the wardrobe of the conductor of the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra!

We had a gorgeous sunny and musical day in the Makaranga Gardens!
[PS - the fever has gone that far, that even I am driving around with an SA flag on my car!]

Prote-ouette

My children gave me some gorgeous proteas for Mother's day.  After they faded, I decided to paint the dried flowers black. [No hidden meaning here - just being creative!]

 I love silhouettes, and these have become 3D botanical ones!

 The absence of colour highlights their structure!
