Kente Covers

It was good to cast our votes in South Africa on our election day yesterday!
And now news with a Ghanaian touch...
I've turned two place mats made from Kente Cloth into pillow covers. These gifts from good friends who lived in Ghana bring colour, texture and and a little ethnicity to my living room!
I lined the blue one with a shwe shwe print and the the other one with a cotton stripe which I over-dyed. I managed to leave the fringes exposed on the side. These drawer-flowers are now the belles-of-the-sofa!

Such a lovely idea to re-purpose the place mats, and have them visible. Such a clever girl you are!Beautiful, vibrant colours.

Beautiful - I especially like the reddish one. We had a very painless voting - almost no queue, fast and efficient - we are very lucky to have the voting station less than a block away from our house!

I think I may know who wove that Kente, they look very much like they may come from the workshop of an Ewe weaver named Gilbert Ahiagble, better known as Bobbo. Or one of his sons. I've had some pillows made from his cloth as well, but I like yours much more! The backing is a perfect compliment, and I like the fringes you got from the tablemats. Very pretty.

Thanks Estelle and Anairam! The voting was actually quite a fun experience - even the little bit of queuing we had to do!
John - that is so interesting! It's amazing that the cloth is distinctive and recognisable! I am very fond of it and one day hope to see it being made in real life!
